Chapter 11

August 10, 1997

It was just after seven o’clock when Montez got back home from his ten-hour shift at Taco Bell. He was anxious to change out of his uniform, take a shower, and put on his new jeans, Tommy Hilfiger t-shirt and Air Jordans. That night, he had a date with Tonya. He was taking her to the drive-in movie theater. To Montez, it didn’t matter what film was playing on the big screen because he planned to on getting plenty of action with her in the backseat of his 1981 Buick Regal. However, Montez knew that Tonya was used to riding in style because her ex-boyfriend drove a brand new Chevy Yukon. But he hoped that his good looks would compensate for his rusted car.

“Hey, Mom,” Montez said as he unlocked the side door and saw his mother standing in the kitchen.

“Hey, sweetie,” Grace replied as she stirred a pot of rice.

He noticed that Shareece was sitting at the kitchen table, filing her nails. As usual, his sister was too busy acting like a princess to lift a finger to help their mother. Shareece had her headphones on and she was listening to her Walkman.

“Hey,” he said.

Shareece didn’t bother to even look up at him.

“She probably didn’t hear you,” Grace offered as she lowered the heat on the burner. “How was work?”

“Okay, I guess.” He paused. “There’s a dude who works there, I swear he must be forty years old–”

“Don’t swear, son.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to, it’s just that… He’s been working there for four years. He said it was the best job he could find with his record and all, and sometimes I think that I might end up like him…”

“Montez, we’ve already discussed this before. Now, you know I didn’t approve of that foolish stuff that you did. I don’t care what you call it, joy rides, whatever. It was wrong.”

“I wish I could take it back.”

“Well, you’ve paid your debt to society.”

“I ain’t never goin’ back to jail. Eight months felt like eight years.”

“I know, baby. The best thing you can do going forward is to stay on the right track. I’m proud of you son…”

Suddenly, Floyd let out a howling laugh from the living room, drowning out the sound of the television. Montez hated everything about his father, especially the sound of the old man’s laughter.

“Grace!” Floyd hollered. “Bring me another beer!”

She quickly dropped her stirring spoon and hurried toward the refrigerator.

“I don’t understand how you let him order you around like that, Mom.”

She looked into his eyes. “There’s a lot of things you don’t understand, son.” Grace opened the refrigerator and grabbed a beer.

“What the hell is takin’ so long!?” Floyd stood at the kitchen doorway.

Grace’s hands were shaking as she held up the beer bottle. “Sorry, baby, here you go, I… I was just about to…”

Floyd smacked Grace across her mouth. She fell to the floor and dropped the beer bottle. The glass shattered across the kitchen tiles. Shareece immediately stood up from the table and walked out of the room as if nothing had happened.
